Abstract

Mahogany is one type of wood species that is preferred by people, but its properties have not been known well yet. The study of fiber dimension variability of wood is very important to determine harvesting age and wood quality. The research aimed to study variability in dimensions of mahogany fiber cells based on the age of growth and axial direction.

 The research uses a factorial Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications (of three individual trees). The first factor was axial direction consisting of the base and top part of the stem, and the second factor was radial direction which consisted of six annual growth rings. Fiber cell dimensions (length and diameter of fiber, the diameter of lumen, and wall fiber thickness) were observed then according to the IAWA method.

The results showed that according to the age of growth and height position of the trunk, the diameter lumen was significantly different. Meanwhile, the length of fibers, diameter of fibers, and wall thickness on axial, radial, and treatment interactions were not significantly different. The length average of cell fibers, the diameter of the lumen, and the thickness of the wall were 9,15 um, and 3,27 gm respectively. There is a tendency for fiber length to increase with increasing growth age, although it is not significant.
